India Produces 50,000 Doctors a Year. But do they have enough seats to serve them for PG?
There are currently 370 medical colleges in the country that offer 49,840 MBBS seats between them. This makes India the largest creator of doctors in the world. In comparison, the United States only produces 18,000 doctors a year. Roughly half of India’s medical seats are in private colleges whose habit of collecting capitation fees is an open secret. According to an interview by a senior member of the Medical Council of India—the apex regulatory body for medical education—gave to the Business Standard, no one has ever formally filed a complaint. Here’s a statistic for you though: doing a back of the envelope calculation, if 24,260 seats are allotted with a Rs 50 lakh capitation each, that totals up to 12,130 crores a year in shady fees.

There are just 22,500 postgraduate seats for which they all have to fight, this includes the candidates passed in previous batches. Over 6,000 seats lie in non-clinical subjects like forensics, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry which don’t interest youngsters due to “less return”.
The aspirations are rising. No one wants to become a “family doctor”. A postgraduate degree brings better opportunities just like any other sector.
The donation for PG in India ranges from 75 lakhs to 1.5 crores depending not only the choice of University but also choice of department. This system disappoints the aspiring students who want to specialise in a certain speciality.

RECOGNITION BY MCI, INDIA
The Delhi High Court today sought response from the government and Medical Council of India (MCI) on a plea seeking recognition of foreign post-graduate medical degrees in India.
A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw asked MCI and Health Ministry to file counter affidavit on the plea filed by four doctors with post-graduate qualification from the Zheng Zhou University at China.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the doctors, contended that under the existing provisions of law and rules of MCI, one cannot practice in India as specialist doctor with a foreign degree.
The bench, however, asked the doctors' counsel that "can there be any bar on declaring some doctor as specialist after having a foreign post-graduate degree."
Opposing the petitioners' contention, MCI's counsel said under the existing rule only professionals with foreign primary medical qualification was registered in Indian Medical Register or the State Medical Register after they qualified a screening test.
Four doctors Dr Madhur Eshwar Rao Basude, Dr Harish Kalra, Dr Shreyash Dadasaheb Pattekari and Dr Atul Anantrao Chaudhari, who got post-graduate qualification (MD/MS) from the Chinese University, filed the petition.
MCI is the body responsible for standards of medical education in India and recognition of medical qualifications.
